The X2 series (28X2, 40X2) have been rumored for several months. They are expected to be based on the PIC 18F series chips, which have more memory and higher speed.
There appears to have been some problem at the chip supplier that has delayed the introduction of the new chips.
If you look at the announcement about the latest Programming Editor (5.0.8), it mentions that the 28X2 will have two program memory slots - which we are assuming means that two separate programs could be loaded onto the one device. There are also some new commands (or at least some new reserved words) in some of the support files associated with the 5.0.8 version of the editor.
