SMD PICAXE40X2 pin-outs

Hi I've designed a PCB based around a SMD PICAXE40X2.

Then I discovered that the SMD PICAXE40X2 is not available in a dual type package!

Apparently it is only available in a 40 pin square package.

I've googled it but have been unable to find pin-out designations

Am I missing a trick (again)?

Can someone from Rev Ed put me out of my misery, please?

The 40X2 is in the 44 pin TQFP package, see the native PIC datasheet for the details.

I don't think that that Microchip use a 'dual' package (I pressume you mean SOIC) for the larger pin out PICs.

I am sure you will be fine, but when I am prototyping with usual parts and then miniaturise, I usually confuse myself with which way up the pinouts are and whether to flip the artwork for the PCB.

Yeah me too

I seem to have lost the ability to "flip" the PCB in my head

I am left with questions I must find other answers to

Its really confusing at the moment as I'm doing a double sided board with a mixture of leaded and SMD parts!

the 'back' of the PCB is mostly SMD with a programming socket

I'm wondering if I should flip it or not?

I'll work it out but I surely miss that useful ability to 'flip' in my head!

This is an area where setting up a CAD package makes life so much easier.
Common device packages will (almost certainly) already be in the CAD library.

The default layer for a footprint is (usually) topside/1/A , typically red.
You should adopt this same standard if making your own footprint.

Westy linked you to the Microchip datasheet which shows the recommended layout, dimensions and pad/land dimensions.
The drawings will tell you if topside or bottom-side view.
Lands are usually topside (bird's eye) view.

If you make your own schematic part and link it to the footprint pad numbers then all is happiness.
And if you flip it to t'other side (usually blue in artwork layout) the CAD mirrors it thus saving the grey matter.
No more flipping in your head.

It might take a while to set it up but, after that, it's plain sailing.

And, whilst you're at it, enter all the ordering information too to make BOM building easier too.
An hour at the front end can save hours/days/pulling hair at the back end.
