How come the 18M can do SERRXD but the 18X can't? I thought the 18X was the newer chip. Or is it a different reason?

Vice versa - the 18X is very much the older (by ~5 years). Perhaps consider the 20X2 if you want some state of the art electronic fire breathing.

The 18M was recently bought out for use in education mainly - the 14M, 18M and 20M range all mainly support the same features.

18X

Well I seems I was wrong too!! I purchased the 18X as it seemed to be the newer device. I am about to buy the 40X2 and a smaller one so, an 18M or a 20X...

Two things to note about the 20X2:
- no external resonator capability - might be important if doing time sensitive stuff (like serial comms)
- no external reset capability
..unlike say the 28X2/40X2

But, otherwise, it's a pretty good chip...
