Programming cable

Hi, I am just starting out with PICAXE and would like to know if the Genie cable is compatible with Picaxe as I purchased one a few months ago.
TIA.

Hi Skatt,

The Genie cable looks to be nearly identical to the AXE027. It uses the FTDI chip and should work fine.

Welcome to the PICAXE Forum.

The GENIE USB cable probably isn't compatible - documentation suggests that it does not appear as a COM port and is selected with the special 'GENIE USB' option in GENIE Design Studio.

Open Device Manager to determine if there is a COM port assigned to the GENIE cable when it is plugged in - if not, then you can't program PICAXE with the cable.

It will not work straight away, but can be fairly easily reprogrammed to work, as it also contains an FTDI chip.
The internal FTDI chip needs to be reprogrammed to use VCP drivers, which is the setting almost all FTDI devices use, but that cable type doesn't by default. If you changed the PID and VID to the AXE027 ones at the same time you could then also use the AXE027 drivers.
