That looks about the shortest way I could see it definitely being done.

However, my gut feeling was that COL could be calculated in one line using some kind of XOR adder or shifting logic, dependent on the ROW calculated in the previous line.

Whether or not any of these solutions will be fast enough for 'on-the-fly' will have to wait till I'm back in front of my breadboard, instead of being in an airport hotel room.

The nice thing about PICAXE projects is that they can often be assembled into a small enough kit that they can be worked on almost anywhere. I spent some time on one of mine on an 18 hour train ride across the US this Christmas.

Now that AMTRAK has added AC outlets at each seat it's even easier to work on such projects while traveling. Of course, the fat lady in the seat next to me looked askance at the whole endeavour.
