I want to program a display board like the moving LED ones you see around. How easy is it to do this - can you buy ready made ones that picaxe will port to? Don't know where to start on this one please can anyone help?

This has arisen on the forum before, & searching shows External Web Link, and External Web Link etc.

How ambitious is your need? LED or LCD ? The diverse moving/spinning message approaches raise issues such as budgets, extra driver chips, LED array addressing, circuit draw current, multiplexing, display rate, message size/held in RAM ? & of course human persistence of vision (POV) perception. The latter is particularly fascinating!

With 16x2 LCDs now thick on the ground (& easily "Picaxable" via techniques such as Hippy's) it's tempting to just feed one horiz. scrolling serial output directly. Naturally the LCD display will be pretty small & dim compared with an LED array. However LCDs have a longer battery life if used portably- message name badge etc.

Get some inspiration from the likes of the moving/rolling message kits of Belgium firm Velleman External Web Link - their 5x7 LED display (Kit MK124) is particularly lucid & striking for the parts involved.
