LCD that runs on AC?

So I looked on the datasheet and it says that the forward voltage is 5VAC. I even contacted the company and the engineer said that it is indeed AC.

Now I know that I am only an engineering student but this just sounds plain wrong. Anybody want to give me their thoughts?

It's a plain LCD with no built-in controller and LCDs need AC driving waveforms so yes, 5VAC is correct.

Really? I guess my inexperience with LCDs shows. How can I even interface this with a picaxe? I have to make my own controller to convert DC voltage to AC?

So does this mean that the similar monochrome LCDs seen in calculators and other devices are running AC waveforms from their batteries? I am still flabbergasted

I think they do work for a short while on DC, but not for long .......
