Got hold of a load these LCD modules, but unable to find a data sheet from the markings on the back. It has a fine ribbon film with 27 wires and also 2 of the 4 poles have + and - marking for the back
light :

Google finds some references from the vluk2142 marking but it's mainly Chinese or Russian and even translating doesn't help.

Any of you LCD gurus able to help?

No, sorry.

"from the markings on the back"
- if there are markings on the back can you do a good quality photo and post?

I looked at the chinese sites and the only relevant datasheet I found was for a graphic LCD controller so it could be the one for your module:
http://pdf1.alldatasheetcn.com/datasheet-pdf/view/169139/EPSON/SED1278DOG.html
You'll still have to guess the pinout of the module itself.

EDIT: No it isn't, its a character LCD controller. I will keep looking.

EDIT: I found a similar cheap lcd with the same connector and 28 pins (Are you sure yours only has 27). Check the datasheet here.

That looks like it is just the LCD with no controller chip.
If it IS just the LCD, then my advice would be to put it in the bin and don't waste any more time or thought on it.
If you also have the control board, then it should be possible to identify the drive chips. (and hence how to control it).

You could well be right BB, although that black strip does hide a hump in the middle, so probably has a chip embedded in it.
