'Can't Run 16-Bit Program' Error

I have a big problem with the software I downloaded - twice - and have reinstalled it many times just to be sure I wasn't to blame. I've just started with PICAXE (08) at school and was so excited by them I brought some home to play with.

Everything is fine - programming etc. - but when I try to download the program to the chip I get an error saying:

Can't run 16-Bit Windows program!
Cannot find file D:\....\picaxe08.exe (or one of it's components). Check to see if the file exists and filename is correct and that all the libraries are there.

Error!
Error53: File not found!

Path Error...
The following path is invalid:
D:/.../picaxe08.exe

I checked and the file is there. I use Windows XP Home. This happens with all the chips you can select. ie. D:/.../picaxe18.exe can't be found etc. If anyone can help me that would be great.
