BS170 to control motor speed

Hi guys,

just wanted to make sure before I order it.

Can I use a BS170 to control a dc toy motor speed?

According to the datasheet, it seems to be ok, as the motors I'm using are:

5v
Current@rated load - 1A.
No load current - 350mA

and the datasheet for the mosfet says:

60v
Drain Current - Continuous 500 mA
Pulsed 1200

It's my first time using mosfets, so I just wanted to make sure it'll be ok. I believe I'll be using PWM to drive the motors through my L293D, so 1200mA on the mosfet should be enough in case the motor stall right?

Thanks in advance

I would have thought it was a bit weedy. I'd get something just to give you a bit of spare. And it won't switching on to it's best ability at Vgs of 5V. I don't know how you're going to drive it optimally. I'd check out some slightly more manly Logic Level MOSFETs.

It'll probably work, but it could be a lot better for a few extra pennies.

(And I'm going to have to modifiy something I said on another thread re: Vgs threshold. This is the first time I've seen it specified at 1mA. I'd only ever seen 250uA before. Oh well, live and learn. Just makes comparison harder.)
