Trolling the Maxim website found they have another RTC that may be of interest to many.
The Maxim DS32B35/DS32C35 accurate real-time clocks (RTC) are clock/calendars that include an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), crystal, and a bank of nonvolatile memory (FRAM) in a single package. The nonvolatile memory is available in two densities: 2 kBytes and 8kBytes.
It comes in an SOIC20 surface mount package, designed to operate from 3.3V and (just for BCJKiwi) it includes two, yes two, Time-of-Day alarms.
Of the 20 pins, the “top” 12 96 per side) are used and strangely ther are two i2c clock pins but a single data pin.
Datasheet at: http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS32B35-DS32C35.pdf
Prices in quantities of 1000 are around US$4 and US$5 each
Would certainly solve the RAM memory shortage for PICAXE systems
