Back to my quest. I see that there is a surface mount version of the 20X2, although it is not available in Australia.

I'm thinking about a small double sided carrier PCB with 14 (alternatively 16 or 18) DIL pins. That way, it should be possible to select the pins that are used in the smaller pinout. Eg hi2c/PWM/hSerial

Hmm. Food for thought. I'll have to fire up Eagle over the weekend.

Now you're talking! Such a 20X2 derived "as needed" hack indeed could be handy. It's fun pondering diverse DIY trimming of course, but it's naturally one way & questionable when SMD style SOIC (Small Outline IC) PICAXE versions abound. You can have them mailed in in a regular envelope of course too.

Butchering a quality product for short term benefits is perhaps akin to gas torching away your vehicle's seating for a better big load fit. Days later you'll be kicking yourself when your stranded mates want a lift...
