Yet another 1 wire device question

Hi guys, I finally had some time to play with my DS2438 smart battery monitor

I had to use a bit of hacking to get it soldered properly, as it's a SOIC8 type chip.

The final product was something like this:

I know it's a very poor quality picture, but I think you can understand which way I went (DIP 8 socket as a base)

Now, when trying to perform a simple test, it doesn't seem to return anything.

Basically what I did was wire my little bug in a way that looks like this:

Which is the way the datasheet suggests.

I know I'm supposed to have legs 3 and 4 hooked to my batteries, but I just wanna see if everything is working properly, by using readowsn.

This would just return the serial number for my one wire device (tested with a ds18B20 and working).

What happens is that when I hook it up to my DS2438, it doesn't return anything.

Now, I'm not sure if the chip has been damaged (maybe due to the soldering process), or if I'm missing something.

I just wanna ask here if anybody could give me some sort of help with that.

thanks in advance,

I know that, but actually my camera can take some jolly good pics, but this pic I'm using isn't one of mine, I just grabbed this from a website because they use the same principle as I used.
