Using a resonator to increase chip speed

I've been using picaxe chips for years and never had the need to use a resonator to increase the speed. My current project using a 28x2 (vB.3) seems to lag a bit so I connected a 16mhz resonator to 9 & 10 with the center resonator pin to gnd. However, the chip is ignoring the setfreq em64 line and not increasing in speed.
I tried the code on a 28x2 module and it works just fine on that, so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Am I connecting the resonator correctly?

Weird, have you tried a different resonator?
I've used 16Mhz resonators often on my 28X2 & 40X2 projects and never had a problem with the picaxe working at high speed etc.
