I miss used "commercial" What i mean by it was, I’m just trying to do it for as cheap as possible.

I don't get paid to do my masters btw. And yes I am researching for my project, by reading manuals and asking experienced people their thoughts on the problem.

Whether or not my project sees the light of day after I hand in my thesis is a completely different matter.

As I see it, people have given you answers to the best of their ability/experience but the question seems to keep being repeated.

Many here are hobbyists, secondary studends doing class projects and even some retired engineers.

Most have used commercial ultrasonic based modules for their robot and other applications for distance measurement. As I think has already been mentioned, these modules use the native PIC chips likley running machine code as oppposed to BASIC programs.
