Right, i've been tasked with making the robot job that has the microswitches for detecting what it hits, is there anything like infared (i know it works with picaxe) that can be interfaced for the purposes of dectection of objects to make the robot avoid earlier like an early warning device??

Are the source many Ultrasonic and other modules including the SRF005 (suits all PIXACE) and the SRF008 which uses i2c comms - suitable for the X and X1 PICAXE parts.

For the 'smaller' robot, there is fairly new range of US sensors which use a single transducer for both Tx and Rx functions from Maxbotix. This halves the size of the module.
