Searching the PICAXE forum with Advanced Search

Attached is a tutorial in pdf file format that may help many understand how advance searching capabilities can help find the information (provided that it does exist of course).

Managed to squeeze the pdf file size down to be within the forum limits.

Enjoy

A search solution for 3 letter words

And now, a solution to finding the post you want when words less than 3 letters are involved . . . . .

The Problem/cause:
Unfortunately, the integrated search capabilities provided in vBulletin (which powers the PICAXE forum) have several limitations which
are based upon a resource versus usability trade-off. To index all 3 letter words would take too many resources, so vBulletin it cuts off
at words of 4 characters and longer.

Lets say we even know the full title of a post which is: “14M to LCD? how?”

Do you see the problem here? 14M, LCD and How are all three letter “words”.

Punctuation such as “ “ (space), “/” and “?”are seemingly ignored.

Adding the wildcard “*” will not help, as this will look for letter combinations starting with “LCD” but they must be character strings/words of greater than 3 letters. So we would find “LCDs” and “however” but not what we are really searching for.

A solution to this ( in part at least ):
Use Google !

Open a Google window and in the search box enter your search as: "text string" site:picaxeforum.co.uk/

so in the case of the sought thread we have: "14M to LCD?" site:picaxeforum.co.uk

then, lo and behold the sought thread is found instantly and its first at the top of the list

even using just the "14M to" gets it first time

by the time we get down to "14M" we have to go down to the 8th item Google found

===================
Tried to add this to my earlier pdf file at post 1 but becomes too big.
Will have to try another pdf file creator at another time
