P.E 6 (latest build) won't run in windows 10

Hey,

P.E 5 works fine, but P.E 6 latest version refuses to load. The splash screen appears and it just hangs there forever. I have to cntl-alt-delete and end task.

It used to work under windows 7 until I upgraded. Any suggestions? I've tried a fresh install of P.E6

Searching the forum, there seemed to be some error with windows 10 for a few users, but different to what I'm experiencing.

Only antivirus I have installed is free version of AVG, I'm sure it's not blocking anything though.

thanks

We can't duplicate this on our Windows 10 machines, so it is difficult to identify where the problem arises.

Please could you install the latest version (6.0.8.3)

When clicking on the icon to launch the software please hold down, and continue to hold down, the shift key until a series of debugging messages appear. We would like to know the very last msg that appears before the hang (the earlier ones are not important as they have worked correctly, it is the last one that is important).

"Loading App Settings" was the last debug that appeared. Just hangs

I installed 6.0.8.3 as well.

When did you update to ver 6.0.8.3? The one I downloaded yesterdy (Sunday) was 6.0.8.2 Interestingly, this time windows 10 popped up with a warning that picaxe was trying to edit my computer setings (or something similar) - I allowed it to anyway. I'm sure 6.0.8.2 didn't have that message during install. Wonder if something from the 6.0.8.2 install is blocked that is overriding 6.0.8.3?

Thanks so far. I can continue using PE5, but wanted to try out Blockly as a possible teaching aid for my students. We're on win 7 at school anyhow, but still, would be nice if it could run on my laptop

Dear all,

Like Blazemaguire I'm also using Windows 10, andI have the same problem: PE 6.0.8.3. hangs forever. I downloaded it twice, closed the virus scanner and even the fire-wall but it still does not load. PE 5 works OK
Any clue what can go wrong here?

Thanks,

Ronald

Workaround PE6 in Windows 10

Been having the same problems.

Not sure what the cause is, but there is a workaround.

Set up a shortcut for PE6, then right click and go to:

properties

Compatability tab

Change settings for all users

Tick the box to run program in compatibility mode and pick Windows 7 or 8 from the dropdown list.

Also tick the box to 'run program as an administrator'

Click all the OKs and run the software from this shortcut.
It should work.

If it doesnt, locate a hammer and hit computer. This wont make it work but may make you feel better.

Thanks for the workaround. We have not managed to duplicate this issue on our own Win 10 machines but will carry on investigating.

It works with pretty much any software which refuses to run.

Technical - you might want to look at the latest windows 10 updates - I had the problem on my home machine, which updates automatically, but it runs fine without the workaround on my work laptop, which doesnt update until I tell it to.

It could well be a conflict with the latest windows 10 updates.

@ Technical - I've replied to your e-mail

Just to add,

I don't get the compatability tab when I right click the icon and chose properties, instead, if I right click the icon, on the window their is a 'troubleshoot compatability' option. Running this wizard causes windows 10 to do some re-jigging, that doesn't work. It then asks if it works, if not, what version of windows did it run under... chose windows 7, and then I successfully got the program to load.

I'm sure it's just achieving the same thing as Jon Dalimore, but it's odd that my version of Windows 10 has a different menu setup to his?!

The plot thickens...

At least I can use it now, but I'm sure it's not the ideal long term solution from technical's point of view.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem!

I have a new PC, DELL w/Windows 10 Pro and most everything else works fine except for the PICAXE Editor 6 and the PICAXE AXE027 cable driver.

As you can see from the demo videos I need this to work so I can reprogram my robots to talk, sing 'n dance to eat!

Hi,

I did the UnInstall first ... ReBOOT'd the Windows 10 Pro on my DELL T1500 PC and using the settings for the shortcut the program still just hangs with the postage stamp size splash screen PICAXE Editor Loading PICAXE Editor v6.0.8.3

Hi,

I tried the shortcut trick from this thread, it doesn't work on my DELL T1500 w/Windows 10.

I got Editor 5.5.5 installed, but there's no driver for the AXE027 cable ???

Trying both Editor 5 and 6 doesn't give me a AXE027 cable driver and the AXE027 v2.08.14 driver doesn't seem to work either.

At least Editor 5 loads ... all I need now is a working driver for the AXE027 cable.

Hi,

Yeah, the manual install fixed the AXE027 driver problem ... I can't wait until the Editor 6 can install ... making the shortcut with admin and compatibility didn't work for me.
