I'm having trouble with my usb to 3.5 mini jack too, so I thought I'd document my woes here as a resource to all that follow coz all that proceeds is a bit confusing... Let's hope this is the last we see of this subject, I bet you're all very bored of this question now!...

*1 things to read first...

http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/docs/axe027.pdf

*2 hardware

Toshiba satellite pro running XP Home Edition version 2002
usb to 3.5 mini jack ( AXE027 )
PICAXE-08M STARTER PACK

*3 software downloaded:

Programming Editor v5.2.0
USB Driver for XP / 2000 / 2003 / Vista
USB Driver for XP (64 bit version)

From:
http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/software.htm

*4 procedure...

*a
downloaded and installed Programming Editor v5.2.0
-so now I've got the editor and 'serial pic programmer' installed and running

*b
downloaded USB Driver for XP
-so now I've got the axe027x64 file sitting on my desktop.

*c
Next I unzipped the axe027x64 and saved it to a new file named "temp" as advised in the data sheet.

*4
Plugged in my cable ( AXE027 ) observed and noted which usb port, and then waited for "Found new hardware wizard" to pop up and selected
"install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" rather than (Recommended)

*5
Unchecked "search removable media (floppy...."
checked "Include this location in the search"

*6
Browsed and selected "test" from the desktop.
(It reads:... C:\Documents and settings\adz\Desktop\test )

*7
Unchecked "Don't search. I will choo....."

*8
clicked Next

*9
..............?

*10
Then here is the problem...
wizard flashes up a box saying:
"Hardware not installed because the wizard can't find necessary software.

..."

that's as far as I've got. Can any one fill in the blanks? much appreciated ...Adz

P.s have tried axe027x64 file and axe027 to no avail!

Moved to "software installation", similar posting removed ( this has more info ).

Afraid I cannot help with your problem though.

To the best of my knowledge, "Toshiba satellite pro running XP Home Edition version 2002" is NOT 64-bit, so you are using the wrong driver.
Remove the 64-bit driver and then install the correct driver.
The old driver must be removed first.

Your first description talks about two different folder locations on your desktop - \temp and \test (4c and 6)...

V. strange ....

It worked fine on my dads cpu when I tried on his last night? mmm...
I did drop a cup of tea on my machine last month.
I thought I got away with it but it seems all's not as rosy as I'd hoped. Thank you very much all for your time and suggestions. I promise I'll keep liquid and electronics separate from now on. Eek

For the record though I'd previously been extracting to a file on desktop. On my dads' I specified a new file path: C:\temp . I'll try again tonight on mine specifying C:\... rather than desktop... and let y'all know.

Once again thank you all for your help
