Solution to robotsuicida's problem regarding SONY VAIO laptop:
I have a SONY VAIO [VGN-A240] laptop with Windows XP home edition, on which I have the PICAXE Program Editor v.4.1.17. This laptop does not sport a DB9 connector[serial], but has three USB ports instead. Therefore I bought the USB to Serial adapter from Prof.Peter.H.Anderson, and since then I have been programming the 08M and 18X PICAXE devices regularly. I have a similar situation on my TOSHIBA Satellite Laptop, and I use the USB port for programming the PICAXE devices.
I am certain your SONY VAIO laptop will work fine with the USB to Serial adapter.
