Error 50003

I believe the error 50003 comes about by way of the date of the DLL & OCX files. I can install on a computer running W95 but not on one running W98. The 95 computer has many less DLL & OCX files and some are later than the W98. Can someone please offer a solution or tell me which DLL & OCX files are required?

The Programming Editor should install any system files it needs and automatically update any which are out of date. If Windows has really got itself twisted up it may make sense to back your data up and do a re-install.

I doubt it's going to be much help but the following is a list of system files and dependencies the 4.0.10 installation includes (E&OE) ...
<code><pre><font size=2>asycfilt.dll 147728 2.40.4275.1

You will get in all sorts of problems if you try to manually install these files. Make sure you have administrator rights (if required) and that the Windows\system folder is not write protected.

Then simply run the Programming Editor installation. It is a standaad MSI style install which will update and add files as and when required.

Thanks hippy, will look at these files and see what I have.
To Technical - I did the installation from the installation program not manually and that was when I found the problem. What is &quot;administrator rights&quot;?

&quot;Administrator rights&quot; refer to your current Windows account (User account) being allowed to change stuff like system settings - display properties, screen saver, amonst the most common. If you are using a limited account (as opposed to an Administrator one), the installation program may be denied access to certain settings and system files which will prevent it from installing the application correctly.

And yes, installing manually often doesn't work because things like OCX files and some DLL files (perhaps other types of files too) need to be registered in the system - many VB controls require you to use the &quot;regsrv32&quot; (or something like that) in order for the control to be recognised.

On a Windows 98 system as normally installed you shouldn't have to worry about Administrator Rights.

Running the BAS805.EXE should install everything needed.

Some of the files there are almost Programming Editor specific in that it's unlikely that other apps would have installed them, so it looks like the installer is doing something. The missing file may be a dependency which isn't needed because something else doesn't exist, or that may be a problem, it might be the same with versions which haven't been updated to later versions. Additionally, some files may perhaps only need installing for certain versions of Windows.

Apart from suggesting you uninstall, re-boot, install again, and see if that works, it may be time to take a deep breath and re-install windows from scratch. I consider it to be routine housework to re-install windows 98SE once every three to six months. You'll probably find it's far quicker to do that in the long term.

thanks again hippy, however what is BAS805.EXE. Is this part of the Picaxe installation or a VB specific application. Is it necessary to run it as well as the original installation program.
I haven't had any further reply from technical regarding the method of installation which was NOT manual.
Any further ideas thankfully received.

The BAS805.EXE is the download from Rev-Ed. If you installed from a CD-ROM, the file may be naed differently, most probably a .MSI file. The BAS805 is not much more than a wrapper for the .MSI

Two further thoughts; have you got the latest INSTMSIA.EXE installer, and you could try downloading the BAS805, both available thorugh the Rev-Ed site ( click &quot;Home&quot; at top of page ).

Hi hippy,
the installer I have is from a CD as I have dial up and the download is too slow. I have checked the file you suggest and fins 2 as follows
instmsia.exe in \chipfact dated 28/05/02 and
instmsia.exe in \progedit dated 04/02/03
look forward to your reply.

Hippy, have solved my problem by copying the missing file from another computer. It appears that the files with older dates had no effect. Thankyou for your help.
