i have created a circuit and started programing it at school, which worked fine. I installed the pic proggramming software at home and it continually comes up with an errorwhen i try to program my chip using the serial cable. Do I need a specific driver to be able to do so?

You don't need any driver. Make sure you have installed the full Programming Editor software and that you have selected the correct mode and serial port (both via View>Options menu).
